These Thangkas illustrate the Buddha’s path to spiritual enlightenment. Buddhist philosophy divides the Buddha’s life into twelve major events. These acts of the Buddha’s life are recounted in the special genre of painting known as the Twelve Great Acts of the Buddha’s Life. These handicrafts tell the story of the Buddha’s enlightenment. The Buddha’s mother dreams of a white elephant when she becomes pregnant, and then gives birth to the Buddha in the garden of Lumbini, where he takes seven steps forward immediately after his birth. The thangka also symbolises the journey of becoming a great yogi: leaving his family palace, experiencing the pain and suffering of those outside the palace, his quest to find a solution to people’s misery. The Buddha began fasting and meditated for years in search of a solution to people’s suffering. However, in all his actions, he still could not reach the level of satisfaction he felt when a little girl gave him rice, which he ate during his meditation under the Bodhi tree. The Thangka also represents the night of the full moon, after attaining Nirvana (eternal peace), when Siddhartha changed from Prince Gautam to Buddha.

Important: all our wooden products are carefully treated before they are shipped from Asia. Products that have been painted should only be cleaned with a slightly damp or dry soft cloth. The use of oil, varnish or wax may damage the hand painting and does not help to preserve and maintain the health of the wood.

Surfaces treated with natural or applied varnish may require care to maintain and extend the healthy life of the products.
